How 13th month pay is computed

  • Formula: total basic salary earned from January to December, divided by 12.
  • Who gets it: every rank-and-file employee who worked at least 1 month in the year, whatever their status or how they are paid.
  • New hires and resigned employees: prorated for the months actually worked. Set the start or end date.
  • Not included: overtime, night differential, holiday premiums, allowances and commissions (unless the commission is part of basic pay). Unpaid absences and leaves reduce basic salary.
  • Deadline: pay it on or before December 24. Some employers pay half in June and half in December. Enter the June half as the advance.
  • Tax: 13th month plus other bonuses are tax-free up to ₱90,000.00 a year. Anything above that is added to taxable pay.

Based on PD 851 and its rules, and the TRAIN law tax exemption. Monthly-rate absences use 261 working days a year. Always check with DOLE for special cases.
